Robert R. Flewelling MA, LLP
I provide psychotherapy that is a uniquely personal collaboration between myself and my clients. While the goals of psychotherapy reflect the individuality of people and their needs, I believe that psychotherapy is an opportunity for people to identify the core of their difficulties, explore and discover a means of overcoming what troubles them and work towards a deeper understanding of themselves. My professional work focuses on anxiety, depression, anger management, substance abuse, and conflict within families, as well as the difficulties of adolescence, including behavioral issues, academic problems, self-esteem, and peer relationship problems.
My professional orientation is informed by the myriad experiences I have had over the years and these experiences provide me with a unique worldview and ability to connect with people. My journey in psychology began during my college years. In the summers of 2002, 2003, and 2004, I worked as an intern in the Inmate Services Department of the Oakland County Jail. Under the supervision of the department, I maintained a small caseload of inmates seeking psychological services while incarcerated and facilitated therapy groups focusing on sobriety and support. I received my Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Michigan State University in 2006. During my undergraduate education, I had the opportunity to study overseas and spent a semester traveling the world with the Semester At Sea program. Upon graduation, I furthered my education at both The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and The Michigan School of Professional Psychology, ultimately receiving my Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from The Michigan School in 2009. I’ve worked in private practices setting in Okemos and Farmington Hills, treating both children and adults. I have also served underprivileged children and adults as a therapist with a community mental health agency in the Eastern Market district of Detroit, and as a therapist for Spectrum Juvenile Justice Services in Highland Park, a program for adolescents who have been adjudicated for a felony and are in need of intensive mental health treatment.
My experiences have given me the privilege of interacting in numerous environments and with a diverse array of people. Through these experiences and interactions, I’ve developed a conviction for the service of people in need. It is my hope to help people improve their lives and advance on their journey towards personal growth.
